Finances in the Student Center
Tuition, fees, aid, and refunds all surface through Finances tiles inside the CUNYFirst Student Center. This chapter walks through what to verify each term so small mismatches do not become registration blocks.
Aid & billing checkpoints
Colleges split predictable billing milestones from one-off exceptions. Knowing which checklist you are following determines which Finances screens matter in your CUNYFirst account.
Scheduled term billing
Use the weeks before classes start to confirm your term bill, anticipated aid, and any departmental scholarships that post separately.
- Open Finances > Account Inquiry and verify charges match your registration.
- Compare View Financial Aid totals with your award letter or bursar memo.
Mid-semester adjustments
Adds, drops, housing changes, or late FAFSA updates can shift balances after the term starts—watch messages in your campus email, not only CUNYFirst tiles.
- Upload financial aid documents through the student portal your college links from CUNYFirst—do not email sensitive files to unofficial addresses.
- If a refund looks wrong, screenshot the Account Activity page before calling the bursar.

Tip: “Account Inquiry” shows activity, while “Make a Payment” only handles what is due right now—open both when you troubleshoot a balance.
Labels students overlook
Financial stop
A bursar or aid hold can block enrollment even when your balance looks small. Resolve it with the office listed on the hold detail screen.
Authorization date
Aid often appears as “authorized” before it disburses. Compare those dates with the academic calendar so you know when refunds may generate.
Direct deposit
Set or confirm refund profiles early in the term. Banks can take several business days after the school releases funds.
Payment plans
and past-due paths
If you cannot pay in full, many campuses offer installment plans through the same Finances menu. Read the fee schedule before you click accept—plans are binding for the term.

Refund timing
Refunds appear only after aid disburses and charges are covered. If you drop a class, review how the change affects full-time status and aid eligibility before you confirm the swap.
1098-T records
Tax forms usually post after January. Download them from the Finances area and store a copy outside CUNYFirst in case you lose access after graduation.
After graduation
Student Center access may change when you are no longer active. Export transcripts, receipts, and aid letters while you still have full permissions, then follow your college’s alumni records process for anything missing.

Identify Patterns
Categorize your portal layout into "Sidebar", "Top-Nav", or "Dashboard" layouts to narrow down where your benefit tiles are likely located.
Prepare Proofs
Retain digital copies of birth certificates and marriage licenses. Use 300 DPI scans to prevent portal upload rejection errors.
Session Timing
CUNYFirst sessions usually time out after a few minutes of inactivity. Gather bursar or FAFSA information before you start a payment or aid acceptance workflow.
